Pecan-Crusted Mojito Bars and Apple Smile Snack

The first two rounds of judging of the State Fair's culinary competition are over. More contests will be judged Friday and Sunday. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days the public can watch the judging in the fair's Horticulture Building. Friday's lineup includes contests using Wisconsin produce; national contests will be judged on Sunday. Check the fair's website for when various categories will be judged.

In the coming weeks we'll run a selection of first-place winning recipes.

This refreshing summer bar recipe won Gerry Cofta of Milwaukee the Key lime bar category in the Cookies and Bars division.

Pecan-Crusted Mojito Bars
Makes 36

Crust (see recipe)

4 eggs, slightly beaten

1 ? cups granulated sugar

2 tablespoons finely shredded Key lime peel

? cup Key lime juice

? cup flour

? teaspoon baking powder

? teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons milk

1 tablespoon snipped fresh mint

? cup rum (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting

?

Prepare crust.

While crust bakes, prepare filling. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, granulated sugar, Key lime peel and juice, flour, baking powder, salt, milk, mint and, if desired, rum, until combined. Pour over hot crust.

Return to oven and bake 20 to 25 minutes until filling is just set and edges begin to brown. Cool completely in pan on rack.

Using edges of foil, lift uncut bar out of pan. Cut into bars and sift powdered sugar over the top. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve.

Crust:

1 ? cups flour

1 cup chopped pecans

? cup sugar

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, cut into slices

?

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 13-by-9-inch baking pan with foil, extending the foil over the edges of the pan.

In a food processor, combine flour, pecans and sugar. Add butter slices and mix until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press crumb mixture evenly into bottom of prepared pan and bake in preheated oven 20 to 22 minutes or until crust is light brown. (It's OK if crust is puffed.) Leave oven on.

----

The Kids' Culinary Challege invites young cooks age 18 or younger to enter. Kyle Pelzek of Hales Corners won the Apple-Inspired Snack contest under the Super Hero Snacks category for this cute concoction.

Apple Smile Snack
Makes 8 smiles

1 red apple

8 teaspoons creamy peanut butter

40 miniature marshmallows

?

Cut apple into quarters; remove core. Cut each quarter into 4 slices. Spread ? teaspoon peanut butter one side of each slice.

Place 5 marshmallows over peanut butter on 8 apple slices.

Top each with remaining apple slice, peanut butter side down, to make a smiling mouth.

Clintons Livid, Or Another Desperate GOP Dirty Trick To Stop Hillary Ahead of 2016?

hillary-bored

Rupert Murdoch?s right wing media empire is pulling out all the stops against Hillary Clinton. Their latest stunt is an attempt to disguise Clinton smearing as Anthony Weiner news.

This comes to us from the News Corp owned tabloid the NY Post:

Bill and Hillary Clinton are angry with efforts by mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner and his campaign to compare his Internet sexcapades ? and his wife Huma Abedin?s incredible forgiveness ? to the Clintons? notorious White House saga, The Post has learned.

?The Clintons are upset with the comparisons that the Weiners seem to be encouraging ? that Huma is ?standing by her man? the way Hillary did with Bill, which is not what she in fact did,? said a top state Democrat.

?.

Worried about the potential impact on Hillary?s likely run for president in 2016, the political power couple has begun aggressively distancing itself from the crippled mayoral contender, according to sources.

Meanwhile, at least one prominent Hillary Rodham Clinton political operative was described as close to ?going public? with a sharp criticism of Weiner ? in order to send the message that the Clintons, fearing longtime damage to Hillary, want him out of the mayor?s race. (That would be someone other than former Clinton White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers, who said yesterday that she was sure the Clintons wanted Weiner out of the race.)

This all sounds the typical right wing tabloid stuff, but knowing the Clintons, it is also believable. This story jumped the shark when it tried to connect Weiner to the potential Hillary run for president in 2016. What the Post was really try to do with this story was connect Weiner to Hillary. I suspect this is yet another dirty trick by News Corp to remind everyone of Monica Lewinsky.

If that?s the case, the right seems to have forgotten that scandals only make Clintons more popular.

However, nothing would really surprise me when it comes to the Bill and Hillary Clinton. The Clintons are well known for keeping a list of people who have crossed them. According to Mark Leibovich?s book ?This Town,? the former president and then future secretary of state put together a list of people who they believed crossed them, and were now considered dead to them after the 2008 Democratic primary. Unless one is huge political force in their own right, think Ted Kennedy endorsing Obama, crossing the Clintons is not a good idea.

Much like the rest of the right?s propaganda machine, the Post story takes quotes from a source, but then draws their own conclusions. No one is quoted in the article as saying that the Clintons are worried that Weiner might damage her potential 2016 bid. That is something that author attributes to unnamed sources.

A deconstruction of this article reveals a bit of potential truth (the Clintons are livid about this) and a whole lot of News Corp trying to use Weiner to bring down Hillary ahead of 2016. Mostly though, it looks like another step in the effort by Rupert Murdoch?s empire to try to stop Hillary Clinton before 2016.

Exhibition: Line of Kings, Tower of London

TOL_kings1.jpg

The mid-1600s was a precarious time to be king. The species was threatened. The reign of Charles I had been brought to a bloody end and the country's failed dalliance with republicanism had seen a fragile rapprochement with the concept of monarchy.

When the restoration occurred under Charles II, a determination to suggest that his God-given role was a necessary constant - and not something to be foreshortened with an axe - seemed like good PR, at the very least.

This might not have been the stated purpose of the Line of Kings but its mission statement had encapsulated keywords such as longevity, endurance and survival, then gold stars all round.

For the Line of Kings now claims - without challenge so far - to be the longest running visitor attraction in the world.

The display was originally envisioned - and realised - as a parade of lineage and grandeur, with the armour (and representations) of kings on wooden horses.

Revamped last week, in the White Tower of the Tower of London, it now offers a twin narrative - the historical artefacts themselves and the story of the attraction.

For the determination to present an unbroken line from William I often led to anachronisms, mischief and work-arounds.

The most famous is the "armour of William the Conqueror" which was way ahead of its time, the equivalent of presenting the White Queen with a digital watch.

Royal Armouries head of creative programmes Karen Whitting, who led the two year revamp said: "Created in the 17th century, the line's message was more about kingship than telling the history of arms and armour.
TOL_kings2.jpg
"We believe the organisers concentrated on making a powerful statement at a time following considerable unrest from the reign of Charles II and culminating in the accession of William III and Mary II.

"For example, William I was displayed in plate armour - a 14th century development for an 11th century conqueror - and his figure once sported a matchlock musket, technology he could not have dreamt of."

All this silliness was stopped in the 1820s when historian Samuel Meyrick wrote to The Times despairing of the inaccuracies. He was invited to apply a more scholarly eye, which resulted in a duller exhibition.

Curator of armour at the Royal Armouries Thom Richardson said: "Meyrick undoubtedly put it on a much more sound and scholarly footing but when he had finished there was practically nothing left to represent the middle ages."

This sparked a trawl for genuine artefacts and widened the exhibition beyond the original theme. This revamp of the exhibition offers collections of weaponry, torture equipment, ornate saddles and suits of armour, displaying an almost effete delicacy for fashion from fluting to gold inlay.

The comments of visitors throughout the years are also on display.

"They have left us amazing insights into their experiences for us still to enjoy today, writing letters, journals, articles and books," said Karen.

The Line of Kings forms part of the Tower of London experience and is the final chapter in the redevelopment of the White Tower.

COMMENT
? "As we gently mov'd along and viewed the princely scarecrows, he told us to whom each suit of armour belon originally, adding some memorandums out of history to every empty iron-side; some true some false supplying that with invention which he wanted in memory."

Twitter community mourns with Lea Michele

Twitter is mourning with Lea Michele in the wake of the apparent overdose of?her boyfriend and ?Glee? co-star Cory Monteith on Saturday.

Monteith, 31, was found dead in his Vancouver, British Columbia, hotel room, according to police, who said an autopsy is expected Monday to determine the cause of death.

Police said Monteith had been out with people earlier, but video and electronic records from the hotel indicated he returned to his room by himself early Saturday morning. He was believed to be alone when he died.

Lea Michele, Monteith?s real-life girlfriend?who was in Mexico when the news reached her, has pleaded for privacy, but fans from all over the world are tweeting at #LeaMichele,?#PrayForLea,?#StayStrongLea,?#StayStrongLeaMichele, where?millions are sending thoughts, prayers and posting pictures of the petite half-Jewish singer/actress with Monteith.

Buzz Feed, which projects ?the viral web in realtime,? has put together a?timeline of their relationship, which is also being massively retweeted, alongside memes (images reflecting a cultural trend or idea) such as:

Some fans simply write to the star, saying nothing, just sending their Twitter thoughts.

Fans are tweeting around the clock in a Tower of Babel of languages from countries as far-flung as Indonesia, which has recently forged closer ties with Western countries.

In England, what was supposed to be a weekend celebration of the musical TV series turned into an impromptu memorial of song and dance for Monteith after news of the co-star?s death rocked a ?Glee? fan convention.

The hundreds of ?gleeks,? as they?re known, joined a chorus of thousands worldwide who took to social media with similar expressions about Monteith?s passing. The actor?s struggles with addiction echoed those of other young stars whose premature deaths also left young fans grieving.

?The whole day was simultaneously the best and worst experience of my life,? said Chloe Harvey, an 18-year-old fan from Portsmouth, England. ?The news was devastating. No one had any idea what to say or do. It just shows how much of a truly amazing guy Cory was that everyone was so shocked and emotional about the news. Everyone was crying and sharing their stories.?

While it?s not known what caused his death, Monteith?s passing recalls the lives of Heath Ledger, Corey Haim and River Phoenix ? actors who battled substance abuse and died in their 20s and 30s. Monteith talked bluntly about struggling with addiction since he was a teenager, calling it a serious problem and telling Parade magazine in 2011 he was ?lucky to be alive.?

Monteith admitted himself to a treatment facility in April for substance addiction and asked for privacy as he took steps toward recovery, a representative said at the time. Michele told People magazine that she loved and supported him and was proud he was seeking help. It was not Monteith?s first time in rehab. He also received treatment when he was 19.

?I think kids really need a place to go and feel like they belong,? he said in the video posted the site for Project Limelight, a Vancouver charity offering theater and arts programs to at-risk youth. ?When I was a kid, I struggled a lot with who I was and where my life was going and what I was interested in. And I was fortunate to have the arts inspire me.?

Monteith similarly moved fans. At the weekend ?Glee? convention, instead of planned revelry like singing competitions and autograph sessions with actors who?ve played members of the rival Warblers glee club, organizers Starfury Conventions rescheduled the final day of the three-day event at Heathrow?s Thistle Hotel so the 250 attendees could mourn him together.

?We all woke up to hear the story, and no one really wanted to believe it was true,? said Chloe-Louise Bond, a 22-year-old fan from Wakefield, England. ?Walking into the main room, you could just feel the tragedy in the air, absolute strangers became a family right in that moment. Everyone was crying and hugging and just trying to get over the shock.?

It was a day filled with sadness and songs. The attendees chanted ?Cory! Cory! Cory!? In unison, they sang tunes like ?Don?t Stop Believin?,? the Journey cover crooned by Monteith in the high school-set musical?s first episode. Curt Mega, Telly Leung and other actors who?ve played Warblers led a group discussion with fans about their memories of Monteith.

?Glee,? with its catchy song-and-dance numbers and high-profile guest stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Britney Spears, became an instant hit when it debuted in 2009 and made celebrities of Monteith and the rest of the relatively unknown cast. Over the past four seasons, he delivered renditions of such classics as U2?s ?One? and R.E.M.?s ?Losing My Religion.?

Monteith served as the show?s resident hunk with a heart of gold. He played Finn Hudson, a football quarterback with two left feet who found more camaraderie in the choir room than on the football field. After his character graduated high school, Hudson sought out to find himself before settling on what he wanted to do with his life: become a teacher and mentor.

Outside the Vancouver hotel where Monteith?s body was discovered, a makeshift memorial popped up where fans left flowers and notes commemorating the actor.

Obesity, booze and sitting: America's worrisome health habits

Tiffany Bailey is tired of the ?fat mom? label.

?I just want to be Tiffany,? she says matter-of-factly.

Her sedentary routine is her biggest obstacle to a healthy life, says Bailey, a 29-year-old Illinois resident and mom to three. Her job as a freelance writer means she sits five to 10 hours a day and, while she?s cut back significantly on her 12-cans-a-day Coke and Pepsi habit, she?s not in the best shape.

?I live in a rural town roughly 80 miles southwest of Chicago,? Bailey writes in a first-person account for Yahoo News this week. ?There is not much to do out here, so getting enough exercise throughout the day is a challenge. I walk with my children around the community, but even that isn't enough.?

Sitting while working, she says, ?has affected my ability to get up and move.?

After her pregnancies, her body didn?t slim back down; instead, she became 150 pounds overweight. She?s eating better now, she says, and she?s noticed a difference in her appearance from just two months ago.

Tiffany Bailey with one of her sons. ?My insecurities about my weight have caused me to miss out on things I shouldn't have,? she says. ?My kids deserve better, and so do I. I lost my own mother when I was only 8, and I don't want my babies to suffer the same heartbreak I did.?

Bailey?s story is representative of a significant finding in a study released Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association: While Americans are living longer ? 78.2 years for the average citizen in 2010, up from 75.2 in 1990 ? the country is not necessarily healthier.

?Morbidity and chronic disability now account for nearly half of the U.S. health burden,? the AMA concluded, ?and improvements in population health in the United States have not kept pace with advances in population health in other wealthy nations.?

Americans lag behind other developed countries in key metrics: premature mortality, years lived with disabilities and a healthy life expectancy.

The United States, the AMA noted, has improved internally against those gauges in the past two decades, but that progress belies increased challenges on a variety of other health hurdles for which Americans are at higher risk: obesity, poor diets, high blood pressure, lack of exercise and alcohol use.

Those particular health concerns surfaced frequently this week in first-person accounts Yahoo News readers shared. We asked them: What is one health challenge you battle daily? How is that obstacle keeping you from being well? How are you fighting it? Do you expect to live a long ? and, importantly, healthy ? life?

Here are some more of their stories.

Drinking or junk food? How about both?

If it?s Saturday night in Peoria, Ill., James McClister has two choices: head to the movies or drink.

James McClister ?Unfortunately, I find both activities equally enjoyable, so whenever I'm not simply drinking, I'm drinking at a movie theater,? McClister says. ?Of course, you're probably thinking, ?Well, that sounds pretty awesome;? and it is. But such awesomeness sadly comes with a consequence: bad health.?

McClister, 25, says he?s challenged by a lack of self-control.

?Greasy pizza, chocolate bars, those long strings of cherry-flavored taffy, doughnuts and pretty much every flavor and brand of small cheesy crackers ? my mouth is actually watering ? if any of these foods are placed in front of me, or within a reasonable radius, I will devour them in the most literal sense of the word,? he says. ?I will eat every crumb, empty every package. No junk food is beyond me so long as it's not actually beyond me.?

In his teens, McClister says, he?d sneak out of bed at night to find where his mom had stashed ?these tube-like chocolate cakes filled with swirls of pure white cream,? and he?d bolt them down. His ?high-octane metabolism,? he says, would assuage any worries of weight gain.

But now, as an adult, his piling the junk food atop the booze is taking a toll: ?Alcohol is unarguably bad for you. It fattens you up, riddles your organs with all kinds of nasty things, hinders your memory ? I think ? increases your chances for a whole host of terrible diseases. As I'm writing this, I'm wondering how the stuff is legal. It's really just a bad substance.?

He?s noticed the unhealthy effects in his midsection, so he picked up running and became a vegetarian. Still, he says, ?I fear it's only a matter of time before it all catches up with me.?

No sleep and too much Starbucks contribute to unhealthy cycle

When Kimberly Morgan?s husband is deployed overseas with the U.S. Navy Reserves or through his civilian job with the Defense Department, her poor sleeping habits emerge. Soon, she?ll notice the wrinkles deepening in her face and the thickening in her waistline.

Kimberly Morgan, ?self-medicating with copious amounts of caffeine and sugar.? ?It's always worst when my husband is deployed,? the 42-year-old Florida mom says. ?There's no one else around to help out, and once you lose a good sleep pattern, it's very hard to find it again.?

In her words, here?s how Morgan sees her own health hurdles:

Husband deploys in January. Kim immediately launches into a flurry of activity to keep herself mentally and physically occupied. This includes doing things like playing Words With Friends until she passes out from exhaustion or reading way beyond that. She reads in bed, so this helps.

By February, she's all funned out.

She makes a fresh pot of coffee at daybreak ? that's 10 cups of high-octane awake by most folks' standards, but just barely makes our intrepid mom lucid. Should she have a headache or not sleep well the night before, she heads to Starbucks where she gets the sweetest, largest, most bad-for-her pick-me-up on the menu (venti white mocha, and sometimes with whipped cream, because, as she tells the barista, "You only live once, honey"). Six bazillion calories later, she's functioning on a normal level, able to do things like speak coherently and drive a car. By dinner, she's crashing, but Kim cannot afford to do this, because she has three kids and a whole night of homework, baths, jammies and bedtime stories to deal with, plus the laundry that didn't get folded when she crashed last night at 2 a.m.

Four months later, when her husband returns from Afghanistan, she?ll have gained 15 pounds, but won?t have recovered any lost sleep.

Life as a cubicle drone

Work is killing Justin Schmid. Well, sort of.

The 39-year-old Arizona resident says his job is too routine to be healthy: He sits, he eats, he commutes.

?My office job is, by far, the biggest challenge to living a healthy life,? says Schmid, who works as an editor at a Phoenix-area nonprofit. Because sitting all day (not to mention the sugary snacks his work provides) zaps his energy level, he?s sometimes too tired to exercise after work.

?I arrive at home with barely any desire to move,? he says, mourning all the workouts he?s forsaken that could?ve helped him shed those pesky 10 extra pounds.

Still, he?s trying, and because he does manage some exercise (the gym, yoga, mountain biking and running comprise his workouts), he?s stayed reasonably healthy. He uses his vacation to combat his sit-all-day lifestyle, opting to hike, walk and run while away from the office. And he?d like to work out more with barbells and kettlebells, and do more pull-ups and yoga. (Better yet, he notes: Commute via bicycle. But, he says, there?s that damn Arizona heat ?)

Schmid doesn?t see himself as an optimist ? ?I'm not a glass-half-full guy about my kind-of-healthy life,? he says ? and believes the deck is stacked against office workers: ?Every day, I wish American corporate culture relied less on the 40-hour work week and better valued the benefits of a physically fit workforce. But that's not likely.?

Sony IFA press event invite

Sony has started sending out press invites for their press conference at ?IFA 2013 scheduled for 4th September. It doesn?t leave any hint unlike the Germany or Paris?invites where they showed off the Xperia Z Ultra which was?unveiled at the Shanghai event ahead of these. Sony Xperia i1 Honami was expected to be announced at one of those events, but we did not see it.

Samsung is also expected to unveil the Note 3 at the IFA 2013 or few weeks ahead of IFA. So it would pretty interesting to see the two companies compete with their next flagship device. The phone is rumored to feature a??5.0-inch 1920?1080 Triluminos, OptiContrast, X-Reality Engine, powered by a 2.3 GHz?Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB RAM and 3000 mAh battery, but ?the main highlight would be the 20MP camera with Mobile BIONZ Image processing. The is also expected to come with new software features and new Camera UI.

The Sony press conference is starts at 4:15 PM (7:45PM IST) on 4th September 2013. Are you waiting for the Sony Xperia i1 Honami ?

Rye residents: Mobile home community on fire

Rye, AZ (CBS 5) -

A fire broke out Saturday night near a mobile home community in Rye, AZ, off of Highway 87 going to Payson destroying six structures, according to residents.

According to Payson Fire Battalion Chief Dan Bramble five of the structures were residences.

Kayla Hall, a lifelong resident, said the fire broke out behind a bike shop that is right next to Rye?Trailer Park.

Officials said it broke out around 8 p.m. Saturday night at the All Bike Sales which is a complete lost.

"I was heading out of Payson because we're just coming out. We saw a huge fire," Hall said.

She told CBS 5 her family is getting prepared just in case.

"We are packing up right now. Just in case it comes, we got dogs and valuables that we cherish. We're packing it up in our motor home," said Kayla Hall.

Dannel Loy, another Rye resident, said she was also taking extra measures.

"I'm going to load up my dog and some of my valuables into my motor home and move them a little farther, across the wash," said Loy.

She said several people in the community are worried.

The Red Cross said several people were staying in shelters on Sunday after 20 to 30 people were evacuated around 9 p.m. Saturday night.

The cause is still undetermined

7 Saudis imprisoned for using Facebook to urge protests

"Sending people off to years in prison for peaceful Facebook posts sends a strong message that there's no safe way to speak out in Saudi Arabia, even on online social networks," said an official with the Human Rights Watch group.

Saudi Arabia has sentenced seven activists from its restive Eastern Province to prison terms ranging from five to 10 years for posting messages on Facebook calling for anti-government protests, Human Rights Watch said on Sunday.

The New York-based rights group urged EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and other European officials who were meeting with Gulf counterparts, including Saudi Arabia, in Manama on Sunday to condemn the convictions.

Eastern Province has seen occasional protests by minority Shi'ite Muslims over the past two years against alleged discrimination and negligence, which the Riyadh government denies.

"Sending people off to years in prison for peaceful Facebook posts sends a strong message that there's no safe way to speak out in Saudi Arabia, even on online social networks," Joe Stork, Human Rights Watch's deputy Middle East director, said in a statement.

"If the EU doesn't raise these cases with Saudi officials this weekend, its silence will look like craven compliance with the rights abuses of an authoritarian state."

Saudi Interior Ministry officials were not immediately available for comment.

A Saudi-based human rights campaigner said the activists were all Shi'ite from al-Ahsa governorate who had set up Facebook pages to urge people to stage demonstrations. "The sectarian situation in the region made the sentences tough and unreasonable," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Human Rights Watch said the seven men were detained in September 2011 and had spent a year and a half in prison before being tried by a special tribunal set up in 2008 to handle terrorism-related cases.

The court did not charge the men with directly participating in the protests, Human Rights Watch said, rather with inciting "protests, illegal gathering, and breaking allegiance with the king".

Saudi Arabia swiftly moved in early 2011 to quell protests by minority Shi'ites over the deployment of Saudi forces to nearby Bahrain to help crush anti-government demonstrations there. A majority of Bahraini citizens are Shi'ites.

But discontent lingers on with occasional protests in eastern Saudi Arabia, where at least 20 people have been killed by security forces since 2011. On Thursday, thousands of Shi'ites protested against the kingdom's ruling al-Saud family at the funeral of a wanted man shot dead by police, an incident that ended months of relative calm in the province.

Apple and SK-Telecom reportedly in talks over LTE-Advanced for next iPhone

The iPhone 5 brought LTE to the iPhone for the the first time, but according to reports out of South Korea, the next iPhone is set to take it a step further with LTE-Advanced. The caveat is that at this point in time, only South Korea is preparing an LTE-A network with the recent launch of a capable version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, according to report from The Korea Times, Apple and SK-Telecom are in discussions over an LTE-A version of the next iPhone:

?SK Telecom is approaching Apple to put our LTE-A technology on the upcoming iPhone 5S. We are in the middle of negotiations,? said an SK Telecom executive, requesting anonymity.

The leg work is reportedly coming from the carrier, eager to have Apple's next iPhone to add to their new, superfast LTE network. LTE-A in its simplest terms could enable download speeds of 150Mbps over LTE, by utilising multiple radio channels at once to download with. SK-Telecom plans to have seven LTE-A enabled devices by the end of the year, but launching with the next iPhone would be nothing if not a massive marketing tool. In the UK, for example, Vodafone has said they didn't want to launch their own LTE network without having the iPhone available on it.

While an LTE-A iPhone would only be available initially in South Korea, the pure existence of such a model would still benefit the rest of the world. When we all eventually catch up, next time around it would sure be nice to have the iPhone compatible almost immediately, wouldn't it?

Mayhem marks start of 100th Tour de France

BASTIA, Corsica (AP) ? Riders at the Tour de France know to expect the unexpected. But nothing could have prepared them for the mayhem that turned Saturday's first stage of the 100th Tour into a demolition derby on two wheels.

Seemingly for the first time at the 110-year-old race, one of the big buses that carry the teams around France when they're not on their bikes got stuck at the finish line, literally wedged under scaffolding, unable to move. The timing couldn't have been worse: The blockage happened as the speeding peloton was racing for home, less than 12 miles out.

Fearing the worst ? a possible collision between 198 riders and the bus ? race organizers took the split-second decision to shorten the race. Word went out to riders over their radios and they adapted tactics accordingly, cranking up their speed another notch to be first to the new line, now 1.8 miles closer than originally planned.

Then, somewhat miraculously, the bus for the Orica Greenedge team wriggled free. So organizers reverted to Plan A. Again over the radios, word went out to by-now confused riders and teams that the race would finish as first intended ? on a long straightaway alongside the shimmering turquoise Mediterranean, where an expectant crowd waited to cheer the first stage winner of the 100th Tour.

Then, bam! Two riders collided and one of them went down, setting off a chain of spills that scythed through the pack like a bowling ball.

And this was just Day One. The bad news for riders: They've still got another 20 stages and1,982 more miles to survive to the finish in Paris.

Keeping his head and riding his luck amid the chaos, Marcel Kittel sprinted for the win, claiming the first yellow jersey.

"It feels like I have gold on my shoulders," said the German rider for the Argos-Shimano team.

The 22 teams know from experience that the first days of any Tour are always tough. Everyone is nervous, full of energy and jostling for position. Adding to the stress this year is the race start in Corsica. The island's winding and often narrow roads that snake along idyllic coastlines and over jagged mountains are superbly telegenic but a worry for race favorites ? the likes of Team Sky's Chris Froome and two-time former champion Alberto Contador ? because a fall or big loss of time here could ruin their Tour before it really begins.

Froome survived Day One more or less unscathed. Contador didn't. The Spaniard, back at the Tour after a doping ban which also cost him his 2010 victory, crossed the line grimacing in pain, his left shoulder cut and bruised. He was tangled in the crash that threw about 20 riders to the tarmac. Contador said he'll be sore for a few days, "but I still have enough time to recover."

Even for the Tour, which has seen more than its fair share of dramas in 99 previous editions, Saturday's calamitous chain of events was exceptional.

"We've never had to change the finish line before," said Jean-Francois Pescheux, the event director who helps pick the route each year. "There's never been a bus stuck before."

The blockage at the line presented organizers with two solutions: cancel the stage entirely or shorten it, he said. They took the second option.

"We announced that in French, English, and Spanish on the Tour radio so that everybody was up-to-date," he said. Then, "in the following three minutes, we were told that the finish line was cleared. At that point, we announced that the finish was back to the real, original finish line."

Because of what Pescheux called "the little bout of panic and crashes" caused by this confusion, organizers subsequently decided to give everyone the same time as Kittel ? 4 hours, 56 minutes, 52 seconds over the 132-mile trek from the port town of Porto Vecchio to Bastia in the north of the island.

That means no one was penalized by Saturday's events.

"It's clear there was a moment of panic, and that's why we put everybody on equal footing," said Pescheux.

"The lesson learned is that buses, that heavy vehicles, they should avoid going through the finish line," he added.

"Everybody helped out, we deflated the tires of the bus so we could move it away as the peloton was fast approaching," said Jean-Louis Pages, who manages the finish-line area.

Organizers fined the Orica Greenedge team the equivalent of $2,100. The team's sporting director, Matt White, called the incident "really unfortunate."

"We took for granted that there was enough clearance. We've had this bus since we started the team, and it's the same bus we took to the Tour last year," he said. "Our bus driver was told to move forward and became lodged under the finish gantry."

Managers at other teams couldn't agree who to blame or be angry with most.

Marc Madiot of French team FDJ.FR was forgiving of the bus driver but furious with race organizers for changing their mind about where to finish the stage.

But the sporting director for Contador's Saxo-Tinkoff team, Philippe Mauduit, sided with the organizers.

"It's not the Tour's fault if there's a guy who doesn't know the height of his bus," he said.

"What caused the problems was changing the finish," said Mark Cavendish, the British sprinter who was counting on his great speed to win the stage but who instead was slowed by the crash. "It's just carnage."

His Omega Pharma-Quick Step teammate Tony Martin suffered concussion in the crash. Peter Sagan of Cannondale, another rider who was expecting to challenge for the win, finished with sticking plasters covering cuts on both legs and his left elbow. Other riders also suffered cuts and bruises. Froome's teammate Geraint Thomas flipped over his handlebars and "really whacked the back of his pelvis," said Dave Brailsford, the Team Sky manager.

"The goal for us is to get off this island in one piece, having lost no time," he said. "It's a much tougher ask than it may seem."

"You don't know what's going to happen. But you know something is going to happen," he added.

Perhaps as soon again as Sunday. The tricky second stage features four climbs along the 97-mile ride from Bastia to Ajaccio, crossing the island's mountainous spine.

Before Saturday's stage, French Sports Minister Valerie Fourneyron met with a delegation of riders unhappy that pre-race media coverage of the race dwelt heavily on doping in cycling.

That was partly the fault of Lance Armstrong. The disgraced former champion now stripped of his seven Tour wins caused a stir by telling Le Monde that he couldn't have won the race without doping.

Obama dares young Africans to seize their future

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) ? President Barack Obama challenged young Africans to shore up progress on the continent that rests on a "fragile foundation," summoning them to fulfill South Africa's beloved former leader Nelson Mandela's vision of equality and opportunity.

Obama, in his own effort to carve out a piece of that legacy, announced a new U.S.-led initiative to double access to electric power across Africa, vowing to help bring "light where there is currently darkness."

The president's remarks at the University of Cape Town capped an emotional day that included a visit to the Robben Island prison where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. The 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero has been hospitalized for weeks, with his deteriorating condition serving as both a distraction and an inspiration to Obama throughout his weeklong trip to Africa.

"Nelson Mandela showed us that one man's courage can move the world," Obama said, flanked by a diverse group of young people during his evening speech.

In deeply personal remarks, the U.S. president spoke of standing in Mandela's cramped prison cell Sunday with his two young daughters, Malia and Sasha.

"Seeing them stand within the walls that once surrounded Nelson Mandela, I knew this was an experience they would never forget," he said. "I knew they now appreciated a little bit more that Madiba and other had made for freedom," Obama added, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

Obama address to a crowd of about 1,100 came nearly 50 years after Robert F. Kennedy delivered his famous "Ripple of Hope" speech at the same university, an address that Obama aides said helped inspire the president's remarks. Kennedy's speech, delivered soon after Mandela was sentenced to prison, called on young people to launch a fight against injustice, creating ripples of hope that would "build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

Laying out his own vision for development on the continent where his father was born, Obama said the U.S. seeks "a partnership that empowers Africans to access greater opportunity in their own lives." Harkening back to a prominent theme from his 2009 speech in Ghana ? Obama's only other trip to Africa as president ? the president said Africans must take much of the responsibility for finishing the work started by Mandela and his contemporaries.

"Ultimately I believe Africans should make up their own minds about what serves African interests," he said. "We trust your judgment, the judgment of ordinary people. We believe that when you control your destiny, if you got a handle on your governments then governments will promote freedom and opportunity, because that will serve you."

The White House says Obama's electricity initiative, dubbed "Power Africa," symbolizes the type of cross-continent ventures the president seeks. Backed by $7 billion in U.S. investment, the power program will focus on expanding access to electricity in six African countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria and Tanzania.

"It's the connection that's needed to plug Africa into the grid of the global economy," Obama said of the initiative.

Private companies ? including General Electric and Symbion Power ? will make an additional $9 billion in commitments aimed at expanding the reach of power grids and developing geothermal, hydro, wind and solar power. However, those contributions fall well short of the $300 billion the International Energy Agency says would be required to achieve universal electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.

Despite his focus on building an Africa that can rely on itself, Obama also said the United States would make no apologies for backing efforts to stand up for human dignity on the continent. As long as parts of Africa are ravaged by war, he said, democracy and economic opportunity can't take hold.

He also touted U.S. investment in health programs ? particularly an HIV/AIDS program launched by his predecessor, George W. Bush ? that have helped millions of Africans access life-saving drugs and reduced the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The White House said the U.S. will spend $4.2 billion this year on the President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief, also known as PEPFAR.

Seeking to highlight the benefits of the initiative, Obama visited a health center Sunday overseen by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The emotional centerpiece of Obama's day was his visit to Robben Island. He was guided on his tour by 83-year-old South African politician Ahmed Kathrada, who was held at the prison for nearly two decades and guided Obama on his 2006 visit to the prison as a U.S. senator.

"On behalf of our family, we're deeply humbled to stand where men of such courage faced down injustice and refused to yield. The world is grateful for the heroes of Robben Island, who remind us that no shackles or cells can match the strength of the human spirit," Obama wrote in the guest book in the prison courtyard, his U.S. Secret Service agents standing watch in the old guard tower above.

Under sunshine and clear, blue skies, Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha took in the expansive view of the quarry, a huge crater with views of the rusty guard tower from where Mandela was watched. Obama commented on the "hard labor" Mandela endured and asked Kathrada to remind his daughters how long Mandela was in prison.

Mrs. Obama asked how often Mandela would work and was told he worked daily. As the family turned to leave, Obama asked Kathrada to tell his daughters how the African National Congress, the South African political party, got started.

Obama opened his Africa trip last week in Senegal. He'll travel Monday to Tanzania for the final stop on his tour.

German aid group says 3 staff missing in Syria

BERLIN (AP) ? A German aid group says three of its staff have been missing in Syria for 45 days and were likely kidnapped.

Gruenhelme e.V. says Bernd Blechschmidt, Ziad Nouri and Simon S., whose last name wasn't provided, were taken by unknown persons from the town of Harem in Idlib district on May 14.

The group's founder, Rupert Neudeck, told The Associated Press on Saturday that a fourth staff member managed to avoid capture and is safe.

Neudeck says the aid group kept the kidnapping secret so as not to jeopardize their safety but all efforts to determine who they are being held by were unsuccessful.

Gruenhelme e.V., whose name means 'Green Helmets' in German, specializes in reconstructing schools and medical facilities in war zones.

Countdown To The Eisners ? Best Writer/Artist - Bleeding Cool ...

By Cameron Hatheway

Sometimes you may have a great idea for a comic, but don?t have the funds to afford an artist to make your vision come to life. Why not do it yourself? Everyone has their own style, and while it may not resemble a Samnee or a Deodato, if you do everything yourself you can tell whatever stories you wish. However doing everything can also be very time consuming, so some creators focus on one or the other to make way for multiple projects. The creators in this category show some true talent in taking on both writer and artist duties, and deserve tremendous amounts of praise because of it. Today I?ll be focusing on the Best Writer/Artist category. If you need a reminder of what?s been nominated, you can find the entire list right here, and see what I chose last time right here.

Keep in mind I cannot vote for who wins (nor can you, probably), as per the rules. However, that?s not keeping me from being vocal regardless!

Who is not eligible to vote?

  • Comics press or reviewers (unless they are nominees)
  • Non-creative publisher staff members (PR, marketing, assistants, etc.)
  • Fans

Before I get back to applying Wite-Out to Terry Moore?s Rachel Rising and filling in my name so I can be eligible for next year, let the games begin!

?

Best Writer/Artist

Charles Burns, The Hive (Pantheon)

Taking place in past, present, and in dreams, Burns overwhelms the senses with his macabre characters and settings, making you feel uncomfortable yet intrigued at the same time. The imagery and radicalized shading is Burns? signature look, and while it?s been a few years since X?ed Out it feels nice succumbing to his madness once more.

Gilbert Hernandez, Love and Rockets New Stories, vol. 5 (Fantagraphics)

Gilbert really loves his women, and it shows when he?s illustrating them in all their exaggerated glory. While certain body parts for his characters are slightly more highlighted than others, Hernandez still maintains a crisp, clean look while highlighting a fun story simultaneously. He makes black and white look good on anything.

Jaime Hernandez, Love and Rockets New Stories, vol. 5 (Fantagraphics)

Like his brother, Jaime has his own unique style (although both Jaime and Gilbert?s illustrations transition flawlessly into one another). Jaime loves his women figures too, only he remains a little more grounded in the execution. The story Jaime tells is a tad more serious as well, with humor sprinkled about at just the right times. Jaime is an ally/master of the black and whites as well.

Luke Pearson, Hilda and the Midnight Giant, Everything We Miss (Nobrow)

The world Pearson has created is an exciting and magical one, reminding me slightly of Hayao Miyazaki with bits of Brandon Graham. The story in Hilda is just as captivating as the art, and Pearson does a wonderful job blending both together flawlessly. There?s still familiar elements mixed with the magic, but bottom line being I strive to get lost in this world again. Pearson provides a product that can be enjoyed equally by young readers and longtime ones.

C. Tyler, You?ll Never Know, Book 3: A Soldier?s Heart (Fantagraphics)

It?s one thing to be an artist, but another to illustrate your own memoirs. C. Tyler finds that perfect balance and does a superb job illustrating the journey she went through in You?ll Never Know. The settings are beautiful, the characters unique, and the dream sequences far out. The format alone of how she transitions the panels and pages is worthy of the nomination.

chris_ware_picture2 Chris Ware, Building Stories (Pantheon)

Chris Ware looked at the format for the traditional graphic novel, said ?fuck it,? and went about making his own enthralling creation like the mad scientist he is. Everything from the presentation to the fourteen assorted stories on the inside was refreshing, for it?s like a Choose Your Own Adventure for comic book fans who are so used to linear storytelling. Following an unnamed woman with one leg doesn?t seem like much to write home about, but Ware is able to make you care deeply for her no matter what story you read first.

Who I think should win:
Chris Ware, Building Stories (Pantheon)

chris_ware_pictureA work ten years in the making, it definitely shows that Chris Ware worked tirelessly on it. No matter what parcel you were reading (14 different stories on a variety of formats), his art continuously ravished your eyes and moved on to an all-out assault on the rest of your senses. To tell a story in the format he presented and still have it all make sense no matter where you started takes immense talent, something Ware has in spades obviously.

I think this is going to be Ware?s year, as I predict he takes home multiple Eisners for Building Stories. Now if only he could design an aesthetically pleasing awards shelf to display them all.

Who I think could win:
Charles Burns, The Hive (Pantheon)

Whether you love The Hive or hate it, you can?t deny that Burns illustrates a damn fine story, one that you would kill to have original art of. While the story is sometimes hard to follow, it?s intentional to keep you guessing until the third book (which comes out in a few years) for Burns? has a master plan he?s bringing to fruition flawlessly.

The fact that it?s in a slightly oversized format is the cherry on top.

Who I think should have been nominated:
Jeff Lemire, Lost Dogs, The Underwater Welder (Top Shelf), Animal Man (DC), Sweet Tooth (DC/Vertigo).

Jeff Lemire goes and has a tremendous 2012, and doesn?t get one nomination in any of the Eisner categories. Something is tremendously awry here. This category in particular was made for him to dominate.

Who do you think should win / been nominated?
