Obama election tweet most repeated but Olympics tops on Twitter

(Reuters) - An election victory tweet from President Barack Obama -- "Four more years" with a picture of him hugging his wife -- was the most retweeted ever, but the U.S. election was topped by the Olympics as the most tweeted event this year.

Obama's tweet was retweeted (repeated) more than 810,000 times, Twitter said as it published a list of the most tweeted events in 2012. (http://2012.twitter.com/)

"Within hours, that Tweet simultaneously became the most retweeted of 2012, and the most retweeted ever. In fact, retweets of that simple message came from people in more than 200 countries around the world," Twitter spokeswoman Rachael Horwitz said.

Twitter users were busiest during the final vote count for the presidential elections, sending 327,452 tweets per minute on election night on their way to a tally of 31 million election tweets for the day.

The 2012 Olympic Games in London had the most overall tweets of any event, with 150 million sent over the 16 days.

Usain Bolt's golden win in the 200 meters topped 80,000 tweets per minute but he did not achieve the highest Olympic peak on Twitter. That was seen during the closing ceremony when 115,000 tweets per minute were sent as 1990s British pop band the Spice Girls performed.

Syria, where a bloody civil war still plays out, was the most talked about country in 2012 but sports and pop culture dominated the tally of tweets.

Behind Obama was pop star Justin Bieber. His tweet, "RIP Avalanna. i love you" sent when a six-year-old fan died from a rare form of brain cancer, was retweeted more than 220,000 times.

Third most repeated in 2012 was a profanity-laced tweet from Green Bay Packers NFL player TJ Lang, when he blasted a controversial call by a substitute referee officiating during a referee dispute. That was retweeted 98,000 times.

This was the third year running that the microblogging site published its top Twitter trends, offering a barometer to assess the biggest events in social media.

Superstorm Sandy, which slammed the densely populated U.S. East Coast in late October, killing more than 100 people, flooding wide areas and knocking out power for millions, attracted more than 20 million tweets between October 27 and November 1.

European football made the list of top tweets when Spain's Juan Mata scored as his side downed Italy 4-0 in the Euro 2012 final -- sparking 267,200 tweets a minute.

News of pop star Whitney Houston's death in February generated more than 10 million tweets, peaking at 73,662 per minute.

Romantic comedy "Think Like a Man" was the most tweeted movie this year, topping "The Hunger Games", "The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises."

Rapper Rick Ross who notched his fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart this year, was the most talked about music artist.

Activist Post: Telecommunications Conference Negotiations on ...

Susanne Posel, Contributor
Activist Post

Terry Kramer, US Ambassador attending the World Conference on International Telecommunications(WCIT) in Dubai, claims that China and Russia are pushing for the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to have oversight extensions to include the Internet ? as of now, they are solely governing broadband telephone communications and international calls.

Kramer wants the ITU to be constrained to its original charter and keep the Internet separate to ?stay pure to the focus on this conference which is telecom service providers.? Kramer goes on to say:??Fundamentally, the conference should not be dealing with the Internet sector,? and, more bluntly, that they?re interested in ?Keeping the Internet out of this conference.?

According to second-hand accounts of the conference by Kramer, Russian representatives propose that telecommunication and Internet security be merged into one issue to be overseen and governed by the ITU.

The goal of this conference is to set an international guidance mandate with the UN at the helm with respect to trans-border communications. Because the Internet falls under this obscure definition, the UN sees it as a global asset of which they should have authority to regulate.

Canada, Australia, Europe and Japan have joined the US in propositioning the WCIT to limit the range of totalitarian controls the UN can impose on the Internet. This alliance and their ideas are being met with harsh criticism from the ITU. There has been a surprising alliance formed with some Arab nations with Russian and China in allowing the UN to take over the Internet.

Nashwa Gad, department manager at Egypt?s Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (MCIT) retracted their previously admitted involvement with the secret draft supported by Russia. Gad stated:?

Our name was associated to this proposal by mere misunderstanding. Egypt has always been supporting the basic Internet principles that ? the Internet should remain free, open, liberal. We do not see that the ITU mandate deals with the Internet.

Other suggestions discussed at the WCIT:
  • Proposal would wrest control of Web addresses from US body
  • Egypt says included on multi-country proposal by mistake
  • Talks on new telco treaty appear deadlocked
  • U.S., allies oppose the extension of treaty to Internet
The UN and the ITU have kept their new coalition under wraps; as well as the new draft of the global governance treaty that is expected to usurp sovereign nation?s ability to control their own Internet. It is expected to also facilitate stringent censorship and impose all-encompassing surveillance measures on Web users. As of now, it is being reported that the United Arab Emirates will unveil the coalition?s proposals.

The secret draft for new recommendations entitled ?Requirements for Deep Packet Inspection in Next Generation Networks? explains that certain issues must be addressed and dealt with at the ITU, such as:

  • Application identification
  • Flow identification
  • Inspected traffic types
  • Signature management
  • Reporting to the network management system (NMS)
Under the direction of Secretary-General Hamadoun Tour, the ITU has moved incrementally toward Internet-centered issues such as cybersecurity, censorship and digital content issues as well as managing the traffic on the Web.

At the WTIC, new regulatory rules are being discussed that provide more stringent restrictions as well as creating a money-making scheme for the UN.

Because all ?calls? are ultimately digital, transmission control protocol (TCP) are used to oversee the beginning, middle and end of all transmissions; including the data that passes through in the middle. Internet users do not have control over TCP sessions because IP providers generate the system and apply the communications under their own authority. The ITU could intercept this process, instill a charge and the payment would be passed down to the customer. Remote connections would obviously become more costly, although it takes the same amount of data exchange to make all digital connections.

In addition, the UTI could have backdoor peering abilities as most ISPs do because the exchange of traffic on the Internet occurs without exchange in the physical world, the UTI could be watching all movement on the Web without detection and claim fees based on observations that are not confirmable or verifiable.

It is expected that the ITU would begin a sort of taxation that international telecommunications corporations would be expected to pay for the ITU?s handling of Web traffic as it flows across the world. ITU members would be privy to the new-found cash flow?that would be in the hands of international governance; which could begin to line the pockets of the UN in record time.

At the inception of the infrastructure of the Internet, the US government funded the project which has now been redirected to private sector corporations. ICANN is contracted with the US Department of Commerce. They are responsible for making sure that websites are searchable, yet also are involved in backdoor attempts to regulate digital data. Policies outlined by ICANN are dictated by private communications giants.

Kramer asserts that the ITU?s new controls over the Internet would cause investors to stop pouring money into digital infrastructure which would result in higher Internet-access costs and keep millions of people from having access to the Web.

Last week, the CIA-sponsored hacker group Anonymous preformed accordingly with a controlled denial-of-service (DNS) attack against the ITU website. They did not actually cause damage to the website, just simply engaged enough traffic to overwhelm the servers temporarily.

In a statement, the ITU said:

The incident blocked civil society, media and other interested parties from following the proceedings, and prevented access to the wealth of online information on the ITU?s WCIT home page and newsroom. Some hacker groups are claiming responsibility.

Judy Blume, 74, blogs, tweets about having breast cancer

One of the most enduring and endearing lines ever written by author Judy Blume can be found in her timeless novel for teenagers, ?Are You There God? It?s Me, Margaret?: ?We must, we must, we must increase our bust.?

On Wednesday, Blume invoked that line in a blog post announcing to readers and longtime fans that she?s recovering from surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer at age 74.

?Like Margaret I used to think bigger was better,? Blume writes in the post, which chronicles her decision to have mastectomy and reconstruction.

Video: What inspires Judy Blume? (on this page)

?Still, the idea of mastectomy wasn?t a difficult emotional decision for me,? Blume continues, stressing that her reactions and decisions are highly personal.

    1. 11 modern novels that belong in the classroom
    2. A look at the life of Penn State coach Joe Paterno
    3. ?How To Be a Woman?: A fresh take on feminism
    4. ?Monkey Mind?: Grappling with the perils of anxiety
    5. Prom: An American rite of passage

She describes her first reaction to her diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma as one of shock.

?Wait ? me? There?s no breast cancer in my family (recent extensive genetic testing shows no genetic connection). I haven?t eaten red meat in more than 30 years. I?ve never smoked, I exercise every day, forget alcohol ? it?s bad for my reflux ? I?ve been the same weight my whole adult life. How is this possible? Well, guess what ? it?s possible.?

Story: Risky reads! 5 books that have been banned

Blume received her diagnosis in June and underwent surgery six weeks later.

?I?m not afraid of surgery. Maybe I should be,? Blume writes in her post. ?Anesthesia can be dangerous but I?d had a hysterectomy seventeen years ago (cervical cancer caused by HPV). We didn?t know it was cervical cancer before the surgery but we knew something was going on. Caught it just in time, extensive but still in situ. No other treatment necessary.?

Story: Teen moms? Killer kids? 6 best young adult novels ? for adults

After receiving a barrage of well wishes and supportive messages on Wednesday, Blume sent out this tweet: ?Tweeps ? thanks for all your messages. I?m feeling fine. Almost embarrassed to say how quickly I was out and about. (Not battling) Lucky!?

'Mad Men' gets Rickrolled in viral video

By Joy Jernigan, TODAY

The entire "Mad Men" cast has been?Rickrolled!

For those unfamiliar with Internet memes, Rickrolling is a bait-and-switch practice in which a video redirects the viewer to Rick Astley?s 1987 hit single, "Never Gonna Give You Up," according to Know Your Meme, a website dedicated to?documenting Internet phenomena.

In this case, British comedian Richard Sandling?has set footage from the first four seasons of AMC's "Mad Men" to the hit tune, with the actors speaking the lyrics. Who knew they said the word "desert" so many times on the show?

The YouTube page says the video was made for Richard Sandling's Perfect Movie, a monthly standup comedy show about films at The Leicester Square Theatre in London. The video, published Aug. 31, has been viewed more than 100,000 times.

"Mad Men," a stylized drama about the world of Madison Avenue advertising set in 1960s New York, has received 17 Emmy nominations, including outstanding drama series, outstanding lead actor in a drama series (Jon Hamm as Don Draper) and outstanding lead actress in a drama series (Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson).

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards air Sunday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. ET.

Energy Efficient Windows: Insulating Connecticut Homes from Frigid ...

Connecticut is known for its climatic extremes: the interior has a humid continental climate, while the southern portions along the coast have a subtropical climate. This means that summers across all counties are generally hot to humid, while winters range from cold to severely cold. To counter such frigid winters, homeowners will need to have heaters installed in their homes and ensure that structural components like the siding, doors, roofs, and windows are well-insulated.

The local government has recognized the urgent need for heaters, and has implemented the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program. This program lends benefits to those who cannot adequately cover their energy bills. There's even a special clause that applies to those who "are unable to secure primary heat, causing a life-threatening situation." A bail of up to $530 in winter heating needs can be issued to those unfortunate enough to require such assistance.

But heaters will do no good if the house to be heated is structurally faulty. A house that fails to secure even its windows will not only be unable to keep the warm air in and the cold air out, but will hamper the installed heater's performance. In light of this, homeowners need to contact a reputable contractor to ensure that key structural components are viable enough to withstand the coming winter months; moreover, inspections may lead to repairs or replacements, depending on the needs.

The window replacement CT homeowners approve of is often performed before the frosty months roll in. What may appear as frivolous spending on new panes actually helps insulate the home, keeping the drafts out. The latest energy-efficient variants such as Low-E Smart Sun Glass is 76 percent more energy efficient than the standard insulated glass produced by other manufacturers, and can really keep those energy bills down.

On the other hand, it will take more than the replacement windows Connecticut locals want to put a stop to Jack Frost. To further insulate windows, components such as window films, rubber sealants, and draft snakes should be installed. Fortunately, most of these components are inexpensive, and can be easily installed.

Homeowners should seriously consider installing the replacement windows CT contractors offer. This and other aforementioned measures will help your family stay warm and toasty during the winter months, and may add some savings to your bank account.
